In his poetry Wordsworth tries to help us see what nature has to offer. In doing so he uses great imagery and language to illustrate his point of view and these are the main aspects of Wordsworth’s poetry that I like. The poems I have studied are; Tintern Abbey, To My Sister and It is a Beauteous Evening. Throughout this essay I will discuss the reasons why I like these aspects of Wordsworth’s poetry and the impact of his poetry on my views of nature.
One of the main reasons I like Wordsworth’s poetry is his use of imagery in his portrayal of nature as a ‘beauteous form.’ Tintern Abbey is one of my favourite poems that represents the powerfulness of Wordsworth’s language and imagery; ‘these waters, rolling from their mountain springs with a soft inland murmur.’ Here Wordsworth creates a vivid image and sound of the landscape around him. I admire the way he uses alliteration to set the tone at the beginning of the poem. The ‘s’ in ‘springs’ and ‘soft’ creates a gentleness that is further reinforced by the elegance of the word ‘murmur’. This use of onomatopoeia calm and soothing atmosphere Wordsworth creates is one of the reasons why I like his poetry.
Another aspect of imagery and language that I like in Wordsworth’s poetry is showcased in ‘To My Sister’. This is evidently illustrated by the redbreast that beckons him out on the ‘first mild day of March’. The rhyming scheme of this poem adds to the speed which places emphasis on the urgency and excitement which has arrived with the birth of spring. I like the way in which Wordsworth creates this urgency because it allows me to become involved in the poem.
Furthermore, Wordsworth’s passion for nature has instilled me with a new appreciation for the natural world around me. I love his description of “the broad sun is sinking down in its tranquillity” which emphasises both the calming effect of nature and its inherent link with God and the spiritual realm. This imagery has allows me to focus in more detail on natures everyday actions and the tranquillity” they offer. The setting sun and the continuous motion of the waves that make a sound, “like thunder – everlastingly” are constant features of everyday life. (Discuss the link between the setting sun, nature and God – rephrase in your own words and include another quote)
In conclusion the main aspects of Wordsworth’s poetry that have had an impact on me include; The vivid images he creates, the language and tone he uses to create these, and the new found respect for nature he has inspired within me. Before I started reading his poetry I was like his daughter in ‘It Is a Beauteous Evening’, “untouched by solemn thought” but as a result of Wordsworth’s words that I am now aware of “the blessed power that rolls/ About, above, below” and I now consider a newfound “Worshipper of nature”.
